Why this drill works
The stop-and-go pump rehearsal isolates the transition so the golfer can feel the body starting the downswing first while retaining wrist angles, which keeps the top of the backswing compact and prevents the reach-and-lengthen pattern that produces an overswing.
How to do it

From the top of the backswing, pump the arms down toward the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground, once or twice, without hitting the ball.

Keep each pump controlled and deliberate rather than rushed, feeling the body lead while wrist angles are retained.

Return to the top between pumps and check that the top position has not lengthened or gone past parallel.

After two or three pumps, let the final rep flow through into the ball, trying to repeat the same transition feel and top-of-swing length.
