Why This Drill Works (Kinetic Mechanics)

When the hips spin open too aggressively in transition, they outpace the arms and leave the club stuck behind the torso, severing arm-body connection. Threading an alignment stick through your belt loops creates an audible barrier: if the pelvis rotates out of sequence before the arms drop into the delivery slot, the shaft strikes the stick. This enforces connected sequencing where the body and arms arrive at impact as a synchronized unit.

How to Perform the Drill

Follow these step-by-step instructions. Rehearse slowly to build proper motor patterns before adding full swing speed.

  1. Take an alignment stick and thread it through your front belt loops so it extends evenly on both sides (0:48-0:55).

  2. Set up to the golf ball normally with an iron, establishing your standard posture and address position.

  3. Initiate the downswing with the goal of timing your transition so your arms bring the club down at the same time your hips open (1:08-1:14).

  4. If your hips spin out too fast, the club shaft will strike the alignment stick, providing immediate feedback through a startling sound (1:17-1:25).

  5. Use the physical constraint and fear of hitting the stick to force yourself to properly sequence your transition without disconnecting (1:05-1:12, 1:35-1:39).

What Good Feels Like

Time the arms dropping into the slot with the hips opening, avoiding any contact with the alignment stick.

  • Clean downswing without the club shaft contacting the alignment stick
  • Arms and chest feel synchronized throughout the transition
  • Ball flight starts on target line without blocks or hooks from getting stuck

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spinning the hips aggressively from the top before the arms have a chance to drop
  • Flinching and backing out of the downswing to avoid the stick
  • Swinging at 100% speed before mastering the transition timing
