Downswing Sequence Alignment Rod Drill
Curated PGA Drill by Porzak Golf
Downswing
10 to 20 warm-up practice swings before hitting balls
Alignment rod (or alignment stick), golf club
Intermediate
Why This Drill Works (Kinetic Mechanics)
Getting stuck occurs when the lower body spins open while the trail arm lags behind the torso seam, trapping the club inside and forcing an early stall, block, or flip. Threading an alignment rod through your belt loops creates an immediate physical and visual reference: feeling the trail elbow stay in front and beat the trail pocket into impact keeps the arms synchronized with the pivot for a clean, connected release.
How to Perform the Drill
Follow these step-by-step instructions. Rehearse slowly to build proper motor patterns before adding full swing speed.
- 1
Step 1
The Setup (1:05-1:12): Place an alignment rod through your front belt loops to clearly identify and monitor the trail (right) side of your body.
- 2
Step 2
The Goal (1:15-1:34): Focus on keeping your trail (right) elbow in front of your right side during both the backswing and downswing, preventing your hands and arms from falling behind your torso.
- 3
Step 3
Transition & Downswing Feel (1:17-1:23, 1:48-1:52): Maintain the feel that your right elbow stays in front of your right side throughout the swing. As you initiate the downswing, feel like your right elbow beats your right pocket to the golf ball.
- 4
Step 4
Practice & Warm-Up Protocol (2:13-2:20): Use this as a warm-up drill, taking 10 to 20 smooth rehearsal swings before hitting any balls, rather than attempting full, aggressive shots.
What Good Feels Like
Keep your trail elbow in front of your right side throughout the swing. As you initiate the downswing, feel like your right elbow beats your right pocket to the golf ball.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Rushing transition before completing backswing or lunging upper body forward towards ball at impact. Keep movement controlled.

Comprehensive Guides Featuring This Drill
A hook happens because your clubface is closed relative to your swing path at impact. Fix it by neutralizing a too-strong grip, stopping your hands from rolling the face shut through impact, and correcting an excessive in-to-out path or a trail arm that gets stuck behind your body in the downswing.
You get stuck when your lower body outraces your arms in the downswing, trapping the club too far behind you and forcing a block or a flippy snap hook. Fix it by syncing arm speed to your pivot, keeping the trail elbow in front of your torso, and squaring the clubface earlier so you can rotate through without stalling.
