Why This Drill Works (Kinetic Mechanics)
Corrects the misconception that weight shift is lateral. Promotes a spiral rotation where pressure climbs up, keeping the swing center steady and preventing energy leak to the outside of the trail foot.
How to Perform the Drill
Follow these step-by-step instructions. Rehearse slowly to build proper motor patterns before adding full swing speed.

Place a golf ball or towel directly against the outside of your trail foot.

Make a backswing focusing on a 'Spiral Staircase' climbing motion (up and around).

Feel the trail hip open like a door while keeping pressure on the inside of the trail foot.

If you sway laterally, you will feel pressure against the ball/towel.
What Good Feels Like
Focus on smooth tempo and maintaining body connection through impact. Your body and club should move as a single synchronized unit.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Rushing transition before completing backswing or lunging upper body forward towards ball at impact. Keep movement controlled.

Swaying happens when your hips slide laterally in the backswing instead of rotating, moving your swing center off the ball and dragging the low point with it. Fix it by keeping pressure on the inside of your trail foot and turning your trail hip back and around: coil around a stable axis instead of drifting off it.
Improve weight shift by loading pressure into your trail foot early in the backswing, then shifting it to your lead side to start the downswing: before the arms or club move. Most golfers do this backwards: they reverse pivot going back, then hang on the trail foot at impact. Fix the sequence with step and pressure drills, not a lateral slide.
