Line Drill - Divot Starts After the Ball
Low Point
3 sets of 10 slow rehearsal reps
Golf club, alignment stick (optional)
Beginner
Why This Drill Works (Kinetic Mechanics)
Compression is a low point ahead of the ball, not extra effort. The line turns an invisible timing question into a mark you can read after every swing, which is the only reliable way to tell whether a change actually moved low point forward.
How to Perform the Drill
Follow these step-by-step instructions. Rehearse slowly to build proper motor patterns before adding full swing speed.
- 1
Step 1
Mark a line on the turf with spray chalk, or scratch one across a mat with a tee.
- 2
Step 2
Take your normal stance with the line where the ball would be. Hit the first ten swings with no ball.
- 3
Step 3
Check where the club marked the ground. The mark must start ON or AFTER the line, never before it.
- 4
Step 4
If the mark starts behind the line, feel the lead shoulder move toward the target before the club releases.
- 5
Step 5
Once eight of ten start after the line, place a ball on the line and repeat.
What Good Feels Like
Focus on smooth tempo and maintaining body connection through impact. Your body and club should move as a single synchronized unit.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Rushing transition before completing backswing or lunging upper body forward towards ball at impact. Keep movement controlled.
