Why This Drill Works (Kinetic Mechanics)
Forward shaft lean is what delivers the ball less loft than the club is built with, and that is what compression feels like. Building it upward from short swings keeps the hands ahead as speed rises, instead of trying to add lean at full speed where the flip is already automatic.
How to Perform the Drill
Follow these step-by-step instructions. Rehearse slowly to build proper motor patterns before adding full swing speed.
- 1
Step 1
Start with 8-iron half swings at roughly half speed, hitting deliberate low punch shots.
- 2
Step 2
Hold a low finish with the hands no higher than the chest, and watch the flight.
- 3
Step 3
When five in a row fly low and feel solid, move up to three-quarter swings with the same feel.
- 4
Step 4
Then full swings, keeping the sensation of the hands leading the clubhead into the ball.
- 5
Step 5
Drop back a rung any time the flight balloons - that is the flip returning.
What Good Feels Like
Focus on smooth tempo and maintaining body connection through impact. Your body and club should move as a single synchronized unit.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Rushing transition before completing backswing or lunging upper body forward towards ball at impact. Keep movement controlled.
