Why this drill works

Splitting the hands on the grip exaggerates hand and wrist feedback, so a cupped lead wrist or extra arm travel that leads to an across-the-line position becomes obvious and easier to self-correct.

How to do it

  1. 1

Split your hands apart on the grip: lead hand at the top of the grip, trail hand lowered a few inches down the shaft.

  2. 2

Take slow backswing reps with the hands split, feeling how the gap makes it obvious if the wrists over-hinge or the arms travel too far.

  3. 3

Focus on keeping the lead wrist flatter, not cupped, since the split grip makes a cupped wrist and extra arm travel easier to feel and correct.

  4. 4

Once the backswing feels controlled with the split grip, return to a normal grip and try to repeat the same shorter, flatter-wristed feeling.
