Start-Line Gate (Separating Face From Path)

Why This Drill Works (Kinetic Mechanics)
Ball start direction is governed overwhelmingly by clubface angle rather than swing path - roughly five parts face to one part path. Isolating start line first sorts out the face, so that later path work produces a predictable curve instead of two errors compounding.
How to Perform the Drill
Follow these step-by-step instructions. Rehearse slowly to build proper motor patterns before adding full swing speed.
- 1
Step 1
Stand two alignment sticks in the ground about six feet ahead of the ball, roughly a yard apart, framing your intended start line.
- 2
Step 2
Hit shots with one job only: start the ball through the gate. Ignore where it finishes.
- 3
Step 3
Missing left of the gate means the face was closed at impact; missing right means it was open.
- 4
Step 4
Only once you can start it through the gate repeatedly should you work on the curve that follows.
- 5
Step 5
Never work on start line and curve in the same session.
What Good Feels Like
Focus on smooth tempo and maintaining body connection through impact. Your body and club should move as a single synchronized unit.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Rushing transition before completing backswing or lunging upper body forward towards ball at impact. Keep movement controlled.
